01

Define the help you are seeking

Write one sentence describing the event, location, date, and immediate problem. This helps a firm determine whether the matter fits its work and whether another type of lawyer may be more appropriate.

02

Confirm practice and jurisdiction

Ask directly whether the firm currently handles matters like yours and whether it can act in the relevant state and court. Marketing language alone does not answer either question.

03

Identify who would do the work

Ask which lawyer would be responsible, who your routine contact would be, and whether another firm may share responsibility. Clarify the arrangement before signing.

04

Compare communication and capacity

Ask how quickly the firm typically acknowledges messages, how updates are provided, and what it needs from you. The answer should be specific enough to set realistic expectations.

05

Review the written terms

Read the proposed agreement, ask about anything unclear, and keep a signed copy. Do not rely on a verbal summary when the written agreement says something different.
